This morning I did not get to go on my daily power walk...if I had I might have ended up with some unwanted power in the form of a lightning strike!!! The most amazing light show was coming across the lake toward our home. You could tell by the wind and the smell of the air that rain was imminent, but it was easy to be skeptical about the actual amount of rain we might get because of our record drought that is plaguing our area.
At about 7:00am the sky opened up and the most incredible downpour began..."yeah, okay...just like the others...we will get about 5 minutes of rain and it will move on" I thought out loud. But when I left for my meeting about an hour later...it was still pouring!!!
I drove to my 9:00 meeting in a crazy downpour while the drainage ditches on the sides of the road began to fill and spill over onto the highways. I wish I could say I was disappointed about having to drive in that wild storm or that I was upset about the prospect of getting soaked running into the coffee house where my appointment was waiting, but I was so thankful for the desparately needed precipitation that I could only be grateful that it seemed to be around for a while.
I left my meeting a little after 11:00am and it was still raining like mad! All the way back to my office it continued to pour. I ordinarily would not be so jubilant about getting a decent rain, but it has been a sad thing to see the wildlife of our area desparate for water and the plants and flowers parched and dying and the lakes and river levels dropping so dramatically that our local economy that depends so heavily on tourism suffering because of lack of water in the region. Of course I was thinking greedy thoughts such as "this is really nice but it would be cool if we could have a few more days of this!!!"
This afternoon the sun came out and of course it was like a sauna with the humidity, but once again, I just couldn't bring myself to complain! Grateful and thankful were the mood of the day. They say we are in for more rain tomorrow...I sure hope it comes a pouring!!!
